Vehicle Knowledge from Land Rover Denver: Gaskets 101

Learning about the components of your vehicle can make it easier to understand when it's time to have it serviced. Your gaskets serve an important function because they bind at least two surfaces together, which prevents gases and fluids from leaking.

The most common kind of gasket is a head gasket. Other types of gaskets include intake manifold gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, and bearing gaskets. Gaskets are made from a wide range of materials, but the most commonly used material to make gaskets is multi-level steel. Copper and rubber are also commonly used for gaskets.

Checking your coolant level and oil level can extend the life of your gaskets. If you notice bubbling, gurgling, or foaming near the radiator, then high levels of compression could have caused a hole to form in one of the gaskets. Furthermore, if you notice a liquid that looks like mayonnaise on the dip stick when you check the oil, then your gaskets may need to be changed.
